Compatibility reminder

Container names such as MOV, AVI, and MKV do not guarantee playback. The browser still has to support the codec inside the file.

Recommended input formats

  • MP4: Best overall compatibility in modern browsers, especially when encoded with H.264 video.
  • WebM: A strong browser-native option, especially in Chromium-based browsers and Firefox.
  • MOV: Common in editing workflows, but playback depends on the codec inside the file.
  • AVI: Container support exists, but browser playback is inconsistent and strongly codec-dependent.
  • MKV: Container support exists, but codec support varies widely between browsers and operating systems.

Output image formats

  • JPG: Smaller files with adjustable quality. A good default for thumbnails and general export.
  • PNG: Lossless output with larger file sizes. Best when you want maximum image fidelity.

Direct URL expectations

  • The URL must point directly to the video file rather than a watch page or preview page.
  • The remote host must allow the browser to request and play the file.
  • Even a valid file extension can fail if the server returns something other than a playable video response.
